Title: Multi Messenger Observations of a Binary Neutron, Star Merger — A Success Story (part I)

Abstract: On Aug 17, 2017 the LIGO and Virgo detectors recorded gravitational waves consistent with coming from the coalescence of two neutron stars relatively nearby. I will describe the unprecedented observational campaigns that led to the detection of the associated optical transient (called a kilonova or macronova).

Title: Multi Messenger Observations of a Binary Neutron, Star Merger — A Success Story (part II)

Abstract: I will discuss the properties of the electromagnetic counterpart all along the electromagnetic spectrum, from gamma rays to the radio, in context of models that were proposed before this historic detection, and further refined subsequently. I will show what has been robustly established and the main open questions that remain.
